Glaciers are melting faster than ever. As the planet gets hotter, our frozen world is shrinking, making the water cycle more unpredictable. For billions of people, meltwater flows are changing, causing floods, droughts, landslides and sea level rise. Countless communities and ecosystems are at risk of devastation. As we work together to mitigate and adapt to climate change, glacier preservation is a top priority. We must reduce greenhouse gas emissions to slow down glacial retreat. And we must manage meltwater more sustainably. Saving our glaciers is a survival strategy for people and the planet. However, in Finland and northern Europe, seasonal ice on land, freshwater areas and seas is crucial for livelihood of societies and ecosystems, and changes in them can cause unpreceded hazards, such as flooding, erosion and habitat changes. As such, we have expanded the context of the World water day’s theme Glacier preservation to include seasonal ice on land, fresh waters and seas.
We invite you to the seminar on Glacier Preservation, organised by Water Association Finland and its Hydrology division in co-operation with the Digital Waters flagship project. The seminar will begin at 12:15 o’clock on Friday 21 March 2025 in Tieteiden talo (Kirkkokatu 6, Helsinki), and it will also be livestreamed for online participants. The first part of the seminar will be organised in Finnish and the second part in English. Register here for participation in person and here for on-line. Maximum number of on-site participants is 135 persons. Registrations will close on March 14th. The seminar is free of charge. Evening reception is free of charge for the members (as well as member applicants) of Water Association Finland, for others there is a fee of 20 €. Jäätiköt sulavat, ja vuodenaikainen jää maalla, makean veden alueilla ja merissä muuttuu nopeammin kuin aiemmin. Planeettamme lämmetessä meidän jäätynyt maailmanosamme pienenee tehden vesisyklistä entistä arvaamattomamman. Miljardeille ihmisille sulavan veden – ja virtausolosuhteet muuttuvat, aiheuttaen tulvia, kuivuutta, maanvyöryjä ja meren pinnan kohoamista. Lukuisat yhteisöt ja ekosysteemit ovat alttiina tuhoille. Työskennellessämme ilmastonmuutoksen torjumiseksi ja muutokseen sopeutumiseksi jäätiköiden, ja vuodenaikaisen jään, suojeleminen on ensiarvoisen tärkeätä. Meidän tulee vähentää kasvihuonekaasupäästöjä jäätiköiden sulamisen estämiseksi. Meidän tulee myös hallita olomuodoltaan muuttuneita vesivaroja kestävällä tavalla. Jäätiköiden pelastaminen on ihmisten ja planeetan selviytymisstrategia. Suomessa ja Pohjois-Euroopassa vuodenaikainen jää maalla, makean veden alueilla ja merissä on elintärkeä yhteisöille ja ekosysteemeille, ja niissä tapahtuvat muutokset voivat aiheuttaa ennalta-arvaamattomia haitallisia vaikutuksia, muun muassa tulvien, eroosion ja elinympäristöjen muutosten kautta. Tästä johtuen olemme laajentaneet Maailman vesipäivän teemaa Jäätiköiden suojelu kattamaan myös vuodenaikaisen jään maalla, makean veden alueilla ja merissä.
Suomen Vesiyhdistys ja sen Hydrologian jaosto järjestävät perinteisen Maailman vesipäivän seminaarin yhteistyössä Digital Waters lippulaivahankkeen kanssa perjantaina 21. Maaliskuuta 2025 klo 12:15 alkaen. Tilaisuus järjestetään Tieteiden talolla (Kirkkokatu 6, Helsinki) ja tilaisuutta on mahdollisuus seurata myös etänä. Introduction
The Water-Smart Society represents a shift in recognizing the value of water, developing water-smart solutions, and managing our future society with regard to water. This requires bold decisions, investments, and new partnerships across all levels of society, including citizens, public authorities, scientists, industries, farmers, and environmental stewards.
The Horizon Europe project IDEATION aims to integrate inland waters into the Digital Twin Ocean (DTO), preparing the development of a Digital Twin for inland waters. This strengthens decision-making, stakeholder collaboration, and adaptive water management. Water-Oriented Living Labs (WOLLs) can leverage DTO’s advanced data management, predictive modeling, and real-time monitoring to test and scale water-smart solutions.
To celebrate World Water Day, we are organizing an event for stakeholders to explore how digital tools, stakeholder engagement, and cross-border collaboration can address Europe’s water challenges. The event will showcase innovations from Water Association, DIWA, Water Europe, and the IDEATION consortium, highlighting efforts to achieve the European Green Deal’s water-related objectives.
Objectives
IDEATION (InlanD watErs in the digitAl TwIn OceaN) aims to integrate inland waters into the Digital Twin Ocean (DTO), thus setting the stage for a new era of water management, driven by data integration, digital twins, and collaboration across diverse water bodies.
